The world’s top 32 Counter-Strike teams arrive in Cologne to fight for the ultimate title
Thursday, May 28, 2026, Cologne, Germany: As the Intel® Extreme Masters (IEM) Cologne Major 2026 prepares to begin, the eyes of millions of fans from around the world turn once again to Cologne, Germany, where 32 of the world’s best Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) teams will compete for one of the most prestigious trophies in esports. Marking the return of a CS Major to the Cathedral of Counter-Strike after a decade, the tournament will bring together elite competition, passionate fans, and a new chapter in esports’ history on one of its most legendary stages.
IEM Cologne Major 2026 will take place on June 2 – 21. Bringing three weeks of world-class Counter-Strike action, the competition will be divided across three tournament stages before culminating in the Playoffs at the LANXESS arena. There, the remaining eight teams will go head-to-head in front of thousands of fans for the Major championship title, a $1,250,000 prize pool, and a valuable point in the ESL Grand Slam VII race.
The Major’s return to Cologne will bring even more excitement to fans around the world, as, for the first time in Counter-Strike Major history, all Stage 3 matches will be played in a best-of-three format, alongside an extra competition day. In addition, fans will have the opportunity to witness the action live during Stage 3, expanding the live experience ahead of the Playoffs. Overall, more than 50,000 attendees from over 70 countries are expected to travel to Cologne to witness the event live, while millions more will tune in through broadcasts available in more than 20 languages worldwide.

Stage 1 (June 2-5):
- Features 16 teams competing for eight spots in Stage 2.
- Elimination and advancement matches are best-of-three
- All other matches are best-of-one
- The top eight teams advance to Stage 2
Stage 2 (June 6-9):
- The top eight teams from Stage 1 and the eight directly qualified teams are split into two groups of eight.
- Elimination and advancement matches are best-of-three
- All other matches are best-of-one
- The top eight teams advance to Stage 3
Stage 3 (June 11-15):
- The top eight teams from Stage 2 and the eight directly qualified teams are split into two groups of eight.
- All matches are best-of-three
- The top eight teams advance to the Playoff Stage
Playoffs (June 18-21):
- Played in a single-elimination format.
- The Quarterfinals and Semifinals are best-of-three.
- The Grand Final is best-of-five.
Teams Attending:
Competing for the IEM Cologne Major trophy, a total of 32 teams have qualified based on their Valve Regional Standings (VRS) rankings. Among the participants, reigning IEM Cologne 2025 champions, Team Spirit, will look to defend their title and add a Major victory to their IEM Cologne legacy. Meanwhile, Team Vitality enters the tournament following their second consecutive ESL Grand Slam title, completed at IEM Rio 2026, and triumph at IEM Kraków earlier this year. At the same time, Natus Vincere has continued to showcase strong form this year, securing winning titles at ESL Pro League Season 23 and IEM Atlanta 2026.
